Embleton Bay 1, Northumberland
This astonishing sunset was the start of what was to be the best 4 days of photography I have ever experienced. We arrived a good half hour before dawn and the sky was already starting to glow golden. The sea just seemed to turn and rush away as we walked onto the beach leaving these wonderful pools to reflect the light. This particular image was captured just as the sun broke the horizon to the right of the image.

Beadnell Harbour, Northumberland
It was the middle of winter and the days were incredibly short in Northumberland. The sunrise had come to nothing having been obscured by heavy rain so we ventured out after breakfast, reaching the harbour around 9:30. The rain was still heavy but within 5 minutes it had stopped and we ventured down to the harbour. Suddenly the sky cleared as if someone had opened the curtains; to one side was a clear sky and to the other the dark clouds you see here. The harbour wall came alive with wonderful golden tones.

Embleton Bay 2, Northumberland
This is the boulder field at Embleton Bay just a little further along the coast and near to the ruin of Dunstanburgh Castle seen here as a silhouette against the sky. This image was captured on the morning following the other Embleton bay shot above. If you ever venture to the location I will warn you that the boulders are incredibly slippery as well as hard.

Bamborough Castle, Northumberland
Bamburgh Castle is one of my favourite coastal locations. I remember visiting it as a young boy but at the time I was only interested in the castle grounds. Now the beach and the landscape hold my fascination more. You can experience some of the most wonderful sunrises here, especially in winter.

Penmon Lighthouse, Anglesey, Wales
I only found out about Penmon lighthouse fairly recently which was such a nice surprise given how picturesque the location is. The trip was however dogged by poor light due to a haze lingering heavy in the sky. This was one of the few good shots of the entire trip and even here I was fighting the brightness created by the clear sky. A lovely location none the less.

Burnham Lighthouse, Somerset
Burnham lighthouse is a very strange wooden structure that you would swear would be washed away or rotten by now. It is however a listed building and significantly larger than you might guess from this image. On this particular occasion we remained at the location for a good few hours shooting as the sun set and the light continued to change. This particular shot is one of my favourite’s ad looks marvellous when printed on silk paper.

Alnmouth beach, Northumberland
I call this image the perfect wave because that’s how the wave appeared to me. It was captured on the final evening of my trip which also produced the two Embleton Bay images above. At the time I was trying to capture the trail of water as the tide swept up the beach but as I watched the waves seemed to get slower and slower. At the same time they reduced in size and curved over perfectly. I shot quite a few images but this one just seemed to have the right timing.

The Isle of Skye, Scotland
I had been out for some time looking for a good sunset location but never found one. It was late May and the days were very long with the sunset lasting for what seemed like hours. On the way back to the cottage where I was staying I spotted these boats moored in a sea lock and could still see the glow of the setting sun. I managed to pull over in a parking spot and capture a few frames.

Central Pier, Blackpool
This is one of the few times where I have deliberately shot an image for a competition. I don’t know why but I just felt compelled to drive to Blackpool and take this shot. It’s a good job I did as it landed me a wonderful trip to Paris with Olympus. It’s actually an HDR image created from 7 separate exposures and carries incredible detail.

Staithes, North Yorkshire
For those of you who know Staithes, you will immediately recognise this is not the normal angle to shoot the town from. Most pictures are shot from above the town looking down to the harbour. I was however on a long circular walk so I had to pass this point and noticed how the boats just seemed to line up. As I set up for my first attempt the heavens opened and I had to take cover. Once the storm passed I managed to capture this lovely image. It feels almost as if the boats are miniatures.

Burnham Beach, Somerset
This was captured on the same evening as the Burnham Lighthouse shot above. It was almost a 180 degree view to the other image and shows the importance of turning round. Notice how the colour of the light has completely changed as I changed my direction.

Boulders, Northumberland
These boulders are actually part of the boulder field seen in the Embleton Bay 2 image. They are however shot on a completely different trip, one where the light was poor and the weather bad. A long walk and an equally long wait for sunrise came to nothing so I amused myself with long exposures of waves washing between the boulders. I love the soft light on the exposed rocks.

Pembrokeshire, South Wales
We found this location almost by accident near to the cottage we had rented. Part of our small group had some experience here but we didn’t expect the wonderful sunset we encountered. The rocks made a great foreground and the tide was just at the right height as the sun set below the horizon.

Marloes 1, Pembrokeshire, South Wales
I wasn’t sure if I should put the location of this image in the description as it could have been taken almost anywhere. I had wanted to shoot a stitched panoramic but the speed of the waves made this impossible. Instead I decided to pan the camera around as I exposed the image in order to create tis wonderful abstract image.

Alnmouth, Northumberland
I just love Alnmouth estuary. I have seen and photographed this boat many times but on this particular evening I knew the tide would be just right and I was fortunate to have perfect weather conditions. I scouted around and found this particular view point and waited for the tide to come in around me and the sun to set. In the end everything just fell in to place.

Marloes 2, Pembrokeshire, South Wales
This second Marloes image was shot on the same evening as Marloes 1 above. In this image however you can see just how dramatic the sky was and also how much light was being reflected from the sea. This was a truly remarkable sunset with some of the most vivid colours I have ever seen. In case you are wondering, yes it was like this.
