Lower slopes of Whernside, YorkshireThis location had long been on my list of places to shoot from my early days of photography. When I got there it didn’t disappoint although its one heck of a drag to reach these trees if you are carrying a heavy medium format camera. Shot of PanF film this image has great detail which is emphasised by the shallow depth of field. One of my favourite images. |

Near Blea Tarn, The Lake DistrictThis tree stands near to Blea Tarn and to me has the perfect shape. In summer its branches are heavy with leaves but in winter the true beauty of the branches is revealed. |

The Isle of Skye 1, ScotlandThis was a very rainy days walking in the Isle of Skye. I can’t remember where this was except it was a large plantation/forest and very dark. This particular exposure was some 20 seconds in the middle of the day. What I like about this print is that you can almost feel the texture of the rocks in the waterfall. |

The Isle of Skye 2, ScotlandThis is the famous old man of storr. The mountains are rugged and the landscape very demanding and muddy. On my ascent it amused me to see a group of young Japanese tourists in sandals and carrying umbrellas whilst we had backpacks and waterproof jackets and trousers. |

Fishermans Rope 1, Holy IslandI had driven out to Holy Island in the hope of some nice winter light in which to shoot the Castle but it was a dull wet start; perfect for detail shots like this. I found an area with piles of old fishing junk including these interesting coils of rope. Converted to black and white with a nice warm tone. |

Fishermans Rope2, Holy IslandCaptured on the same morning as the image above, this is another angle on the same ropes. I used a Medium Format film camera to capture these images as it gives a lovely soft background with a very limited depth of field. Shot on Black and white film with a warm tone added in post processing. |

Fishermans Lock-up, Holy IslandShot within 100m of the rope coils and again on the same morning as the images above. I spotted this old weathered door to a fishing hut with the plant growing up the side. Shot on Black and white film with a warm tone added in post processing. |

Holy Island Boat, NorthumberlandAs you might have guessed by now this was a very productive morning for me despite dreadful weather. This boat seems to get photographed all the time but I wanted to create something different. I decided I would use a shallow depth of field to throw the background out of focus but leave the recognisable shape of the castle in the background. Shot on Black and white film with a warm tone added in post processing. |

Whitby Steps, North YorkshireI like this image very much. It was shot on Fuji Velvia slide film and later converted to black and white. I used a wide angle lens angling it downwards to give a feeling that you might fall down the steps and into the image. I have actually printed it as large as 45 inches by 30 inches and whilst it loses a little of its sharpness it’s great from normal viewing distance. |

Castlefield Bridges, ManchesterI shoot quite a lot of work around the Castlefield area of Manchester. I think it has a nice feel of old and new and the railway bridges are particularly photogenic. If you look carefully at this image there are many more bridges in it that you first see. If you try to count them, don’t forget the little footbridge on the left and also the reflections. |

Modern building, LiverpoolIt was the end of January and the harsh weather and snow that had been with us since before Christmas had just cleared. The light was crisp and strong and was perfect for architectural images. I love the new architecture that is springing up all over Liverpool and this building just reminded me of something from a science fiction film. |

Docklands, LondonI used to work in the City of London (please don’t hold it against me) but as I was moving back North many of the organisations were moving out to Docklands. On a recent trip to London I decided to visit the Docklands area was very impressed by the architecture. Perfect for black and white. |

Docklands skyline, LondonThere is a park near to docklands which does give good views of the skyline but seems to be seldom visited. I find this picture quite dramatic because of the storm clouds over the financial district. Perhaps it was telling us what was to come. |

Inside the monument, LondonThe London Monument commemorates the great fire of London and stands near to London Bridge. I am surprised more people don’t visit it as for a small fee you can climb the spiral staircase inside the monument and once at the top there are great views across the city. |

Ships Rope, LiverpoolThere is an old red boat tied up near to Albert Dock in Liverpool. I don’t find it an easy subject to photograph but if you just concentrate on a small area of the boat there are some great details. With this shot I wanted to show the coils of rope on the boat through the port hole but also use a shallow depth of field to emphasise the detail in the foreground rope. |

Buenos Aries 1, ArgentinaThis is Recoleta cemetery in the heart of Buenos Aries and is the resting place of Eva Peron whose grave still receives fresh flowers each day. You may feel it’s a strange place to visit and photograph but the tombs there are works of art. It’s an amazing place and so calm and peaceful in a vibrant city. |

Hills of the Lake DistrictThis is a view of Rest Dobb and The Nab from near to the summit of The Knott. The thing that caught my eye was this amazing dry stone wall that was perfectly straight and just seemed to stretch off into the distance. The storm clouds rolling in with shafts of sunlight didn’t hurt the image either. |
