Guest Photographer - Steve Gosling
Standing at Friars Crag on Derwent Water one cold and wet morning I wondered if I’d get any photographs. The cloud cover was low and heavy; the wind was icy cold and very strong; the rain was …… well, wet! I played with the idea of retreating back to the Theatre by the Lake for a hot coffee but my streak of insanity (essential for any landscape photographer) won out and I stood my ground.
With the camera (a Hasselblad 503CW fitted with a 150mm lens and a Phase One digital back) firmly mounted on a solid Gitzo tripod I waited …… and waited ………. and waited. For at least two hours I consoled myself with the thought that even if I moved on somewhere else nearby the weather would be no better. And the wind was continually shifting the cloud cover, giving intermittent holes in the sky which gave me hope that I might get the burst of sunlight I wanted.
For one short twenty minute period my patience was rewarded. The clouds parted and the sun shone through, illuminating the landscape below with a rapidly changing pattern of light & dark. I ended up with a few different shots that worked but this one is my favourite. It’s a visual reminder of my philosophy of landscape photography in the UK i.e. if you haven’t got wet you probably haven’t got a good photograph!
